Difference between bralette and bra

Before diving into the bralette pattern recommendations, let’s quickly talk about the difference between a bralette and a bra.

A bralette is a bra that is unpadded, and typically does not have an underwire. It is often made of soft, stretchy fabric and is designed to be a comfortable alternative to bras. On the other hand, a bra is a more structured undergarment that typically has cups, underwire, and adjustable straps, providing more support and shaping for the breasts.

Bralettes are a great alternative to regular bras, offering more comfort and being fun and easy to sew, as they usually requiring less fitting than wired bras.

1. Simplicity S8228 by Madalynne Intimates

Simplicity 8228 is a paper sewing pattern for soft cup bras and panties with lace trimmings. The pattern includes 2 views of bralettes: halter and race back. You can also omit the racer back and replace it with bra straps instead. The pattern also includes a pantie pattern.

2. Hanna Bralette by Studio Costura

The Hanna Bralette is a popular digital sewing pattern for a v-neck bralette with made with stretch lace and underlined with knit fabric. The neckline has a beautiful scalloped edge lace detail where you can get some fun playing around with beautiful lace trims. 

You can also hack this sewing pattern for a bikini top, which is available on the designer’s blog. I have been eyeing on this pattern forever and have bought the PDF pattern last year, so now I’m excited to make myself a Hanna bralette with pretty stretch laces!

3. Jordy Bralette by Emerald Erin

The Jordy Bralette is a PDF digital sewing pattern for a classic triangle-style bralette with a vertical seam, wide band and back closure. You can follow the pattern designer Erin’s step by step video tutorial to make this bralette.

What’s worth noting is Erin also sells many beautiful bralette kits for this pattern on her website, which is great for someone who just started and has a hard time collecting all the notions for bra making!

4. Watson Bra & Bikini by Cloth Habit: 

Although called a bra, the Watson Bra & Bikini pattern’s characteristics and style is really more like a bralette. This sewing pattern set includes a 70s-inspired soft cup bra and bikini, perfect for lounging or dressing up. Unlike other bra patterns, this bra pattern does not use underwire. 

I love the plunge neckline design and how versatile the pattern is – you can easily convert it into a bodysuit!

5. Roxie Bralette by Madalynne Intimates

Bralette sewing tools & tips

Now I have made quite a few bralettes and bras myself, I thought I’d offer some tips for anyone who is just starting out with lingerie making. 

To sew a bralette, the first thing is to collect all the fabric and notions. Bra and bralette sewing needs several types of notions, such as bra strap, fold-over elastic or picot elastic, hooks and eyes, and bra rings and sliders, etc. 

For beginners, I recommend buying bralette sewing kits, to get everything you need for your first bralette project. These kits are generally affordable, ranging from $20 to $30. Many of the designers of bralette patterns mentioned above have their own online stores selling bralette kits for their patterns.

In addition to materials, make sure your sewing machine has stretch stitches (e.g. zigzag stitch). I also would recommend getting a set of microtex needles and a walking foot. Both will help the delicate stretchy fabric to move smoothly under your sewing machine and minimize skip stitches!
