10 Must-Try Wide Leg Pants Patterns for Every Style (including free patterns)

In this post, I’ve rounded up 10 popular wide leg pants sewing patterns in a variety of styles to help you create the perfect pair of wide leg pants to add to your wardrobe essentials!

And the best part? Three of these patterns are completely free, so you can start sewing right away without any extra cost!

Do you love wide leg pants?

Wide leg pants are typically high-waisted with a loose fit through the legs, making them very comfortable to wear year-round.

For a long time, I wasn’t a fan of wearing pants, especially since they often felt uncomfortable as someone with a more bottom-heavy body shape… until I discovered wide leg pants. Somehow they maintain the perfect balance of being comfortable and stylish at the same time.

I have since sewn a few pairs and got a few more in my sewing queue. Keep reading to find out which pattern(s) I’m using. They have quickly become some of the most versatile pieces in my wardrobe, and I hope you will love them too.

Now let’s dive in!

1. Persephone Pants and Shorts by Anna Allen

sewing patterns for wide leg pants

The Persephone Pants and Shorts by Anna Allen are a cult favorite for a reason. Inspired by 1920s men’s sailor pants, these wide-leg pants feature a unique front button fly and no side seams – which I found quite unique!  The high waist and fitted hips create a beautiful silhouette that I found quite french.

Don’t like button fly? She offers a zipper expansion pattern in her shop or check out this tutorial on how to convert from button fly closure to zip fly.

I bought this pattern back in 2023, cut out the pattern, then paused the project when I got pregnant. I’m waiting for my weight to stabilize a bit before resuming the project.

Anna Allen’s Pomona Pants are the epitome of comfort and style. These pull-on pants feature an elastic waistband, high rise and relaxed fit. Just like Persephone pants they feature no side seams.

The pants pattern includes two views: tapered leg and wide leg. With the shorts pattern, you are basically getting three patterns for the price of one!

3. Dawn Jeans (4 in 1!) Pattern by Megan Nielsen

The Dawn Jeans pattern by Megan Nielsen offers four different styles, including a wide-leg option. These jeans are high-waisted with a flattering fit, and the pattern comes with options for tapered, straight, wide, and shorts versions. If you’re looking for a classic pair of wide-leg jeans, this pattern is a great choice.

I have heard great things about this pattern for a long time and have been meaning to try it. I have seen some people adjust the wide leg version to reduce the flare of the pants since they prefer it being less wide, and the process seems to be quite easy.

7. Straight-Leg Pants from Japanese Sewing Book

These straight-leg pants are from the popular Japanese sewing book <大人の毎日服> (translated as “Everyday Clothes for Adults”), item #26. While the instructions are in Japanese, the detailed diagrams and simple steps make it easy to follow, even for non-Japanese speakers.

Though it’s labeled a straight-leg pattern, it’s actually more of a wide-leg style. The name “straight leg” differentiates it from another pattern in the book, which features an even wider, flowier leg style.

I borrowed this book from my local library, and have traced the pattern and made 3 pairs of pants from this pattern, cotton, lightweight denim and cupro.
